*leaked* Blackberry OS 7.1 wifi hotspot test
*Disclaimer: This test was done using a leaked Blackberry OS 7.1 firmware. The final release version might yield different results and a test will be redone when an official version has been launched. This firmware could very well be a beta copy. Who knows.
ANYWAY…..
I decided to try the wireless hotspot feature of the leaked OS build of the BBOS 7.1 for the BB9900. The Wireless Hotspot was originally suppose to be launched with BBOS 7.0 but for some odd reason was never the case. Nevertheless, it is included in 7.1.
Wifi hotspot was originally one of the main reasons why I decided to upgrade from my 9800 to the 9900 as the 9800, running BBOS 6.0 was not going to get the 7.0 feature which had the promise wireless hotspot.
The results were quite disturbing actually. I don’t know whether it’s the network to be blamed, or the fact that I’m in my basement doing this test or if it’s the phone to blame or because it’s the fact it’s running a leaked version of the OS.
But this is the results. I had it originally connected to a netbook but the speedtest screenshots of those got screwed up. so I redid the test on my macbook pro instead.

as you can see the download and upload rate is less than 0.5Mbps
So I decided to run the same test on my galaxy s 2 which is running on the bell network
Both phones are set up right next to the macbook pro in the basement on the same desk. The major difference is one is running a 9900 on the Rogers network, the other is running a Galaxy S 2 off a Bell network.
Looks like I’ll be tethering off my bell network for the time being.. haha
Anime North 2011
Anime North 2011 has come and gone and I am glad that I was able to go again this year.
Same place as always, the main convention is at the Toronto Congress Center and the panels are held in the Doubletree International Hotel. At first I was planning on going, had the tickets purchased. Later I found out the group I got the tickets with did not include me in their hotel plans and I was not willing to drive back and forth from home to the convention every day for the three days. Waste of gas money. So I told them to leave me out of the anime north this year that I was not going to go.
Later my other group of friends asked if I wanted to go and said that they will be staying at the closest to the convention house.. Which to me was “alright.. its close enough. about a 5 min drive which is not too bad. So I decided to go. Since I already took those days off work anyway might as well get the most out of it.
Me and my friend went to the opening on friday morning to get our tickets for the weekend. Got there at 10 and noticed there was a huge line up.. We also noticed that no one was going into the building so we asked one of the volunteers working there what was going one… They told us that they aren’t letting people in for the tickets will 1pm…
We both looked at each other and was like “wtf” so we went to the closest mall to waste time. Woodbine mall sucked while I was attending Humber, 5 mins away from that mall, and it still sucks today. Not alot of good stores available.
Went by to continue waiting in line.. It started drizzling. 2-3 hours after that we got our tickets and were walking around.
Took quite alot of pictures as always.
We spent most of the time walking around the convention checking out the cosplayers. some were really well done. there were quite a few of them that wore a tad bit too revealing costumes.. Normally I probably would not mind, but the girls in the costumes were not good looking at all.. lol
Anime North this year was alright. Still did not buy anything so I’ll save that for either a trip to New York or save it so I can spend it when I go to FanExpo.
I really want saskue’s sword.. it’s soo badass!!
Dropbox
Dropbox is a great cloud based service for backing up and syncing important documents/files across multiple computers. It works across multiple platforms such as the Mac OSX, Windows and Linux on the computer side and the iPhone app for the mobile size with a blackberry app and android app coming soon. Although a mobile version of the web-end is available at m.dropbox.com
Dropbox offers 2GBs of free storage with the option to add additional storage for a small monthly fee. With this service you can and a smartphone with data, you can carry all your important documents without having to manually transfer. I believe the option to edit will allow for better use of the app, such as being able to edit it on the smartphone and having it synced automatically with all your computers so you’ll have the latest version of the file wherever you have a connection.
I highly recommend Dropbox to everyone to try out here
