Mystery Solved: My PC won’t sleep

So about a month ago, for some odd reason after working since I got the system, my computer would randomly wake up at night even though I did not touch the keyboard or move the mouse. I had also set the LAN port not to wake on LAN or special packet (which means that I can’t remote wake the computer from any remote desktop client such as Window’s Remote Desktop Protocol, Logmein or Teamviewer.)

It was late at night when this problem happened (at around 2am, so I didn’t give it much though. I gave up trying to find the solution cause I was just too lazy to find out. So since then I had left my computer running at night and my room got warm cause heat builds up in a closed room.

About a month later, Neowin makes a post about this issue and how a lot of people are having this issue. One of journalist had this issue and discovered a solution to it as well. Turned out that Google had added a task to repeat every hour to check for updates. I don’t know how that was added but it somehow caused the computer to wake up from sleep. So I disabled that and ever since it’s been able to sleep and wake up whenever I tell it to. And the occasional bump to the keyboard when someone goes into my room.

Finally got the issue fixed. It was starting to get annoying (not really…). lol

*leaked* Blackberry OS 7.1 wifi hotspot test

*Disclaimer: This test was done using a leaked Blackberry OS 7.1 firmware. The final release version might yield different results and a test will be redone when an official version has been launched. This firmware could very well be a beta copy. Who knows.

ANYWAY…..

I decided to try the wireless hotspot feature of the leaked OS build of the BBOS 7.1 for the BB9900. The Wireless Hotspot was originally suppose to be launched with BBOS 7.0 but for some odd reason was never the case. Nevertheless, it is included in 7.1.

Wifi hotspot was originally one of the main reasons why I decided to upgrade from my 9800 to the 9900 as the 9800, running BBOS 6.0 was not going to get the 7.0 feature which had the promise wireless hotspot.

The results were quite disturbing actually. I don’t know whether it’s the network to be blamed, or the fact that I’m in my basement doing this test or if it’s the phone to blame or because it’s the fact it’s running a leaked version of the OS.

But this is the results. I had it originally connected to a netbook but the speedtest screenshots of those got screwed up. so I redid the test on my macbook pro instead.

as you can see the download and upload rate is less than 0.5Mbps

So I decided to run the same test on my galaxy s 2 which is running on the bell network

Both phones are set up right next to the macbook pro in the basement on the same desk. The major difference is one is running a 9900 on the Rogers network, the other is running a Galaxy S 2 off a Bell network.

Looks like I’ll be tethering off my bell network for the time being.. haha

New Years…

I’m a little late in posting this. But HAPPY NEW YEARS… and welcome to 2012. Supposedly the end of the world occurs at the end of this year, for people who believe in that prediction.

I’ve been sick for since New Years. Sigh… Got Food Poisoning from Moxies on New Years Eve and have been sick ever since. Just getting better now, but still not 100% yet. Looks like im going to avoid the Moxies in Fairview from now on. Scared I might get food poisoning again. :(

Other than that, I almost bought the Blackberry Playbook which they are selling it for more than 50% off at their official website. $199 for 16GB, $249 for 32GB and $399 for the 64GB. The US site is selling all three versions for $299. I made the order for it, but decided last min that the money is better off being spent else where so I emailed and cancelled the order.

Then this morning the power at my house went out for 3 hours. Luckily I had a back up UPS for 2 of my 3 machines. (Note to self: Get a UPS for the media server). The power came back just as I was about to leave for work. Talk about a waste of a morning with no power…. Nah I just slept. No power outage can prevent me from being online. That’s what a smart phone with wifi hot spot is for. ^_^

That about wraps up the first 4 days of 2012. Great start so far in the new year…. NOT!!! =.=
