Ginza North York…

Went to Ginza with some co-workers after work today. Yes another Japanese restaurant… but not an All You Can Eat place. so this is a different experience.

We decided on the Set Dinner for 4 people for $70 dollars total. Split that between 3 people it came to about $30 per person. We also tried to order O Toro Sashimi there for about $15 for 3 pieces. The server told us it would take about 20 mins to prepare but we didn’t mind since we still had the set dinner. We were later told that the O Toro Sashimi was not fresh and asked if we wanted to cancel it or not.. We opt to listen to the server’s advice and cancelled the order.

The place is nicely decorated and a nice atmosphere. The menu had a great variety of selection between Japanese food and Thai food and the prices seem reasonable.

The set dinner came with 4 miso soup and salad, 12 pieces of assorted sashimi, Dragon Roll consisting of 8 pieces, Kamakachi Roll consisting of 6 pieces, Spider Roll consisting of 4 pieces, Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, Been and Chicken Teriyaki.

Kamakachi Roll – tuna, tempura flakes, green onion and spicy mayo sauce
Spider Roll – soft shell crab, tobiko, avacado, cucumber, green onion and mayo
Dragon Roll – Tempura shrimp, crab meat, tobiko, avocado and mayo

Their fish was pretty fresh, though one of my co-workers commented it wasn’t as fresh as the last time he was there. But overall the food tasted fresh, the food presentation was enjoyable and like always the miso soup was good.

The service there was pretty good, refilled our tea whenever we finished our cup and we didn’t have to remind them to do it. They’d just do it automatically which is a good sign. They were even nice enough to let us know their O Toro was not up to their standard of freshness and offered us a chance to cancel it before they prepared it and brought it out for us. I suppose that is a good thing for us since we are eating raw fish. If it’s not prepared well enough and the fish is not fresh then it would have been bad for us as a customer to eat it only to go back and complain, or worse…

The total meal was $70 + tax and tip which brought up to about 90 dollars… so about 30 dollars per person which is reasonable at a Japanese restaurant of this calibre. Overall the experience at this place was pretty good, I’d like to try their other locations as well and perhaps their O Toro sushi would be better?

This would be the second place I know of besides Kumai in Mississauga that servers O Toro Sushi/Sashimi, however unlike Kumai, I do not know how well this place prepares it and serves it. Or if it is even the real deal since at Kumai 2 pieces of O Toro Sushi was $20 dollars where as this placed served 3 pieces of it as sashimi for $15 dollars.

Until I can try the O Toro there, too early to tell if I’d recommend this place. But I will definitely go back to try one day.

They have 4 locations
– Yonge and Clark (Thornhill)
– Bay and Bloor (Yorkville Area)
– Bayview and Finch (East of Bayview on Finch, North York)
– Dufferin and Major Mac (Vaughan) is their website for full menu on each location. Seems like the Yorkville one is a little more expensive for the same items. I’m assuming because of the area they are in.
NTS: Take pictures of the food next time! =p
